Fred Figglehorn: Not Worthy of the Name
FRED Society Home | Back to Fred Flouting
His name is Lucas Cruikshank. He claims to be an “actor” and a “comedian” from “Nebraska.” And his alter ego, “Fred Figglehorn,” is a You Tube sensation, going viral with over 111 million channel views.
And, we're sad to report, Lucas Cruishank is a Fred basher.
That’s right. Once again, my fellow Freds, we are the victims of negative stereotyping and character maligning. For Fred Figglehorn is a shrill, obnoxious, and, frankly, rather insulting characterization that further harms the reputation of our great name.
Cruikshank says he developed his Figglehorn character to make fun of video bloggers who think everyone is so interested in every little thing that they do. We like Cruikshank's premise, but disagree with his decision in naming his irritating alter ego Fred.
And why is this insult to the great name of Fred so popular?
One psychiatrist we spoke with says it is similar to the human compulsion that makes us want to watch a train wreck. Another, thinks it’s much the same urge that makes us laugh at other people’s pain (think American Idol). In other words, it’s just people being people.
But we’re not buying that.
We at Fredquarters think it’s just another case of the kind of wanton disrespect that we Freds have had to put up with ever since Freddy the Freeloader first came on the scene. An unwitting conspiracy to forever perpetuate the stereotype of the neanderthal, the hobo, the crazy hateful preacher, the over-the-top-air-headed-creepy Fred (aka, Fred Figglehorn).
As you all know, the main goal of The FRED Society since 1984 (before Lucas was even born!) has always been to improve the image of Freds. The damage this non-Fred interloper has done to our great name could be monumental and we can only hope it won’t prevent future mothers-to-be from naming their next child Fred.
So what can you do? First, if you have the stomach for it, subject yourself to a Figglehorn video by clicking here. Then, tell us what you think. If you’re so inclined, tell “Lucas” the “comedian” what you think as well and let him know that we Freds are not happy about his choice of name.
Together, we can make this world a better place for all (real) Freds.
